My perspective:
At first I thought it was a ploy to sell products (I use PC by the way)After thinking about it...
....it does click through to a memorial site.
I work for lids.com, something like 30% of our business stems from the main adverts on the homepage. The goal is to get the customer to the product purchase page as quickly as possible with few clicks. From a marketing standpoint this is not going to help sales. It may however, help the brand’s image.
Also at some point they had to contact Rosa, and get her to sign off on the ad. Is it wrong to think that they may have had some sort of relationship with her in the past, maybe even paying usage fees to utilize her image? I’m willing to bet that they only had paid to use the images for the span in the 90s. Meaning that to reuse the ad today they would have to renegotiate a contract with her family. I will guess that just setting this up cost them a pretty penny with the money going to Rosa’s family.
With that said, I agree with a little bit from everyone. I just think that the thread was lacking the understanding that these ads are not cheap. In this case it could only boost apple’s image, not ipod sales. Who knows, maybe because they had a relationship with her in the past they just wanted to do this in her memory.
