I find it wierd that on a site where the majority of the users work in the creative industry for commercial clients people seem to be confused about wtf an ad is. I don't care if apple made this 5, 10 or 30 years ago, or if they claim it's in homage, or whatever it links to, its ADVERTISING. The question raised by designbum that kicked this thread off is whether it's ethical to use an image of rosa parks in an advert. simple. I don't think it is, so I agree with designass. The posts rambling on about how we live in a capitalist world and that's just the way it is, so apple are great because at least they're raising issues etc. are worrying! what's next, NESTLERELIEF for somalia?
