if you're going to be staying in Barcelona, Tarragona which is a very small city, is just a short train ride south. It depends what you want to do, but the scenery from the train is gorgeous and the town itself, while it's a little boring 'cause it's small, has an odd charm. It's very sleepy and quiet if you want to get away from cities.
