    no. i'm being literal. i read the salon article just after and that calmed my temper. the only thing that left me continually confused was the monster around the dump.

    but here:

    The two most confusing and mysterious characters in Mulholland Drive are the burnt bum, who we shall call "The Monster", and the Cowboy. The Cowboy and Monster symbolize the yin and yang of Diane's subconscious. The Cowboy is her conscience, her good side, while the Monster is the evil within her that controls her worst fears and secrets from her past. Looking at the scenes in which the Cowboy and Monster were present can prove this.
