I watched Raging Bull again last night on a friend's gigantic flat screen and was just mesmerized with how beautiful each frame is, especially when all the steam is rising inside the ring. It's also interesting that for the montage sequences (like when jake and his wife are sitting around the pool), Scorsese did use a color stock, with this light blue tint, which i'm assuming he did to suggest a passage of time (2-3 years went by in 2 and a half minutes). I love it when directors mix/mash different stocks, although Oliver Stone took this to a ridiculous level in Natural born Killers.
