i'd say mr visualplane hit the nail on the head with the big agency description.
2 cents regarding the small agency part of a big network: they are fighting for scraps (production level work) and recognition. also, if its underneath a holding company they have to grow - that is key to their success. And growth demands sacrifices and long hours.
so, if you're after the big brands and big projects go big agency, OR small agency in a big network.
if you want a job you're happy with. make sure the agency/design shop is rooted with a good vision and happy individuals.
