Because I love Lois, haha. I can go along with that theory as well, but it seems to obvious. So I think it can go either way. I would prefer Lois and Clark, but Chloe is pretty cool too. Just not Lana.
In the comic books, doesn't Lana marry Pete but name their first child Clark because she's still in love / obsessed with him? That's what I thought, anyway.
Basically, if it doesn't go the way you believe, then maybe Chloe will die, most likely from something Lex will do, and then Clark will actually become Superman, to do good. He realizes, through Chloe's death, that this is what he's supposed to do, and does it for Chloe as much as he does it for himself and others. So that also puts the final nail in the coffin for the relationship between Clark and Lex, b/c Clark would never forgive him having to do with the death of Chloe. Then he goes to the Daily Planet, works with Lois and Jimmy. Falls in love with Lois, and the rest is history :)
