I always tried to avoid fontbook for those reasons, I wish I had a better suggestion to your problem but I just havent attempted to use that application in such a long time.
Perhaps try the Linotype FontExplorerX if thats a possibility, free and works quite well I am finding in the two or three weeks I have been using it.
