My wedding advice:
Do what you want. If other people aren't paying for it (i.e. parents), they don't get to choose. If you want formal, go for it, but if you want to get married on the beach in jeans and a button down shirt, and you bride wants to wear combat boots, do that.It's the only possible way you'll have fun.
Oh, and being creative can help make things VERY cheap. My wife and I, after honeymoon and album costs, will have paid around $8,000US for everything. It doesn't need to be a $50,000US affair.
