  DXF is the AutoCAD format.

  Depending on which version of AutoCAD it is it could well be a 3D file. Illustrator I'm not sure about but Freehand will open 2D DXFs
  as long as they're not saved above version 11.

  Also there is an array of conversion tools (generally rather expensive though) which will convert them to bitmaps a;lthough all AutoCad stroke information will get lost as will all hatching normally.
