my bad, maybe i wasn't clear enough. my co-workers activate fonts by dragging their fonts into their user system fonts folder. i don't. they were showing me how the font automatically updates itself in photoshop when they do that. but for some reason, just as an exercise to test my system, i did it to see if it would work on my machine. which it didn't. which is strange because we're all running G5's with OS X.
btw, thx stimuli. so i guess it is a font manager issue. hopefully, since LFE is in beta, they will add that extra functionality before it goes official.
