i was in the same boat as you, then realized iPhoto is great if you let it do what its intended to do; catalogue photos.
i use the iPhoto library as a dumping folder for incoming photos.. if i want to make edits to any images i make a copy and work on it as i would any other project.
there's also a couple tools available to help manage multiple iPhoto libraries across different drives/ locations.. then you can just backup entire libraries to DVD or whatever as drives become full.
