Manual focus is fine but I've never used a non-CPU lens with mine so I really coulnd't tell you... you'd prbably find the answers to that on the Nikon website somewhere...
As for the Nikon software... if you are shooting on the RAW NEF setting you have to use the Nikon software to extract them... if you are using any of the other settings, ie. jpeg or tiff then you can simply drag them into Photoshop... but the Nikon software runs REALLY slow, especially on a poxy eMac which is what I am working on now until my new machine shows up at work...
