I 100% agree w/ piperboytoy. Losing your cool will not get you anywhere, especially not in this business.
Ask her what she means, mention the postive comments from before, if you must, be a little formal (read:cool/icy) about it all.
And I wonder, did you think she was a RAGING BITCH before you got this email from her? Probably not, or she probably wouldn't have been on you references list anyway.
That being said, if you tell her off, like many have suggested, I would DEFINITELY not use her reference. (that's a big DUH)
