Jevad, I'll assume we're talking digital here. I use an EF-S 17-85 mm IS USM. I think it's a bit over priced, but a good walk around lens.
Reviews complain about softness, CA from 17-24 mm. I myself have not found CA to be a problem (post process in PS). It's a good start lens, but like I said, a bit over priced.
It is an image stabilized lens (IS), so even though it's not too fast, the IS helps in low light.
The USM motor is super quite, and AF is fast and accurate.
Now for a good standard prime, I would go with the Sigma 30 mm that was just recently released. It's super-duper.
With the 1.6x crop, this becomes a 48 mm lens on the 20D which makes it a nice standard lens to have.
If I were going to start with a prime, I would go with the Sigma 30 mm, NO DOUBT. It's on my list for purchase.
