Recent European history does not suggest it has a very good record of standing up to totalitarian ideologies.

=====================Not saying European governments have not supported tin-pot dictatorships in their times (and contniue to do so); but the EU was instrumental in the transition to democracy of Eastern Europe. Not only that but several European governments have been vocal about speaking out against autochratic regimes sucah as Zimbabwe, Sudan, Uzbekistan etc. Conversely, US hypocrisy in supporting dictatorship in one region and promoting “democracy” in another, hardly gives them a “good record of standing up to totalitarian ideologies.”
