I'd go 17 just for the extra real estate on the screen, and the higher resolution. I'm not sure if the actual technology of the screens differs at all, but also make sure you get one that can go REALLY bright.
I've seen some work done with Photoshop on an ibook that looked pretty bright on its screen, but put it on a PC laptop with X-Brite technology, and it looks sorta dull... IMO Apple have not kept up with the competition with regards to screen quality on notebooks.STM make really good bags to fit the 17" versions, as long with heaps of other manufacturers. If you're a student, I'd be going for a backpack model, where your notebook is concealed entirely...
