My first design book was Principles of Two-Dimensional Design by: Wucios Wong.
it's ony 96 pages and is a very short read but it helps to illustrate the basic principles offForm, repetition, structure, similariy, gradation, radiation, anomoly, contrast, concentration, texture, and space.
