The 1st design book I read – assigned by a college instructor in a web design class – was The Non-Designer’s Design Book by Robin Williams. It’s thin and an easy read with basic rules of design explained clearly but without any amazing graphics.

A basic book I would really recommend is The Elements of Graphic Design by Alex White – another thin book but with more fundamental rules of design explained – it’s more for people interested in graphic design as a profession. It has a lot of excellent practical and historical examples.
