First of all, just because a band "raise(s) a middle finger at Republicans and Bush ' doesn't make it socially conscious or tell it like it is. In fact, they offer nothing of substance about politics or the administration except for saying, essentially why are we in this dumb war we don't want? That is in fact dumbing down the issues for adoring teenyboppers who don't read the papers, don't follow world events, but have no problem saying bush is an idiot because in entertainment circles that's the popular thing to do.
The fact that they desire to make change isn't in fact my complaint. My critique is that they're a watered down punk band who's now asking Good Charlotte to make beats for them and writing cliched songs about "walking the streets alone" and other vague allusions to existential themes that are way beyond their intellectual capabilities to understand (or articulate).
Moreover, they've now tapped into this pseudo goth/emo thing purely to commodify their package, to add credibility and new fans, rather than on concentrating on doing something edgy or groundbreaking with the music itself. It's a classic case of style over substance, in my humble opinion.
Now mg, I like you from what little I know, and I don't see why our differing opinions on music need to envoke any hostility. I just feel like when a band like Green Day goes soft or preachy or super commercial they've lost what I initially liked about them. And in my mind, that makes them floozies.
Then again, I could be wrong.
