You can try to reset the thing, but it might now work. This happened to me twice. They would start freezing, then I couldn't turn them off, and I would have to wait til the battery drained then I would plug it in to charge it and try working with it only to have it lock up again. I am on my 3rd iPod (two replacements from Apple).
