  rinback tone is completely different than a ringtone.

  it's a fairly new thing (i think) where the people who call you hear a song instead of a normal ring...if that makes any sense

  essentially you can, it has to be in some basic ausio format, how they engineer how you hear it is another story. It's a matter of hacking that software to put in your own stuff. Let's say some application controls which .mp3 they hear, you substitute your own work or sliced loopable .mp3 for the default version.
