    cosmo, Radio-Carbon dating is used for objects that contain Carbon, hence the name. Potassium-Argon dating is used to date extremly old minerals such as the Pre-Cambrian Shield that exists in certain areas of the world. Whatever rock types, such as igneous granitoids, etc, that contain the consituent minerals such as Potassium and Argon.

    One of the most interesting things about so-called 'absolute dating' is at the Mid-Oceanic Ridges. The oldest ridges left due to subduction, are Jurassic in age. That relatively young in terms of the Geologic Time Scale. Date it soon or lose it forever. I think they lose something like 1 cm per year. Doesn't sound like much but it is to scientists.
