Not that I have much to add, BUT:
I lost the greatest thing in my life about two months ago. I love her to fucking pieces. I loved her for more than three years.
I just called her in New Jersey from a payphone in Sydney. And my my, it's a sad state of affairs when I shakily offer up a juvenile "I love you" and realize there is really nothing I can do.
She says, "You know I love you too." Something very patronizing about that.
Sometimes I can't help but feel that things happen for a reason; that fatalism has it's place in these laughable loves--and other times I feel like I have to have faith and fight for the things I believe in.
