    Something similar happened to me recently. If this is a small job, you can just let it go. If the client uses the stuff for something else he'll 'show his colors'. If this is a big job and you had a LOT of trouble making this imagery, then the client should understand that he has to pay. It's a delicate thing and not so long ago I managed to irritate a client a bit. The problem is.... they KNOW that it should be paid work, but they're trying their luck because they know that they give you a lot of work. You should be good to clients, but clients should learn to be good. Basically, if it's a small job, look at it like an investment in the reletionship between u & the client.
