The instructions are not that hard, especially not if you're a designer!
My apartments furniture is made up of about 95% IKEA stuff (yes, I am poor). Most of the stuff is pretty durable. It won't last a lifetime, but it'll last until you can afford to buy new/better stuff or until you grow tired of it.
IKEA has both poor, medium and high quality stuff. In most cases you can determine the quality by just grabbing the furniture and just shaking it about a bit.
