Borges said something like this:
people have invented everything as an extension of what they can do or what they can't do easily. for example, a car is the extension of your legs, a phone is the extension of your voice, a painting is the extension of your dreams... but writing is the extension of your thoughts. that was the first and the only really relevant invention humankind has come up through the ages.
