Downtown at Pine is nice, neat the aquarium, queen mary and harbor. Ocean Ave all the way to Seal Beach is great too. I lived in Bellmont heights for a few years and the Bellmont shores area can't be beat. Just stay away of anything from 7th to the 405, that's where all the violent douchebags from the "hood" live.

I agree dont go "North"!! i would say from the ocean(livingston/ocean blvd) to 4th st. is good (a lot of diversity) and from "Junipero" to "Xiemino" and your straight! And remember parking sucks!
I stay in Belmont heights and the neighborhoods relaxed and clean - I used to stay in "Alamitos Beach Area" (4th & Cherry )Where most of the property is well kept, but it's borderline...(Snoop-D-O-DOUBLE-G... But still a fresh area (indie theatre, cafe's, vintage shops, furniture, etc..)
But the best way to find your spot is to cruize the neighborhoods (DAY & NIGHT)
    hope this helps.
