    Max is really bad about this. It has a limit (not sure if it's computer related or just a fixed number - I've had trouble rendering above 5000pxs). So the work around is to render pieces at a high resolution and piece them together in PS.
    Go up to the render buttons, find the drop down box, and there will be choices like: SELECTED, BLOWUP, VIEW, and a few more.
    That's what you will need.
    I'd go with BLOWUP, select a portion, render it, then move the selected area over. Just make sure not to change the size of the blowup area or it will change the size of the blowup (but I guess you could rescale in PS).
    Hope that helps, I"ve never had to do it, but that's the work around.
