Not too sure where Appleton is, but Broadway seems cool. Lots of diversity in LB, meaning some great restaurants, unique people, good shopping and also some poverty (which leads to crime). Like any big city I guess.
If you're serious about buying you should spend some time in the neighborhood talking to the peeps and neighbors. Chances are, you'll love it there, its a great place...Good luck!
