I would suggest setting up, if you haven't already, some kind of client section of your site where they can log in and upload materials, check progress, etc. That way, they'll feel connected all the time.
Being close by doesn't make much of an actual difference. You have to fight the perception of convenience of course, but don't forget that when it comes to web, there really isn't too much of a benefit of geographical proximity, and try and relay that to them.
