hah another one.
i think it was introduced in Illustrator6 and hans't changed much since.
you select the layer or group you want the mask to be applied on and you go to the transparency window, there you pick 'make opacity mask' a dashed line will appear under the layer name.
a mask can be anything, from a gradient to an image. Black is 0% opacity, White 100%. Just like a photoshop Mask
