Not to toot our own horn, but the best reference, by far, is the big yellow FontBook by FontShop.
http://www.fontshop.com/index.cf…Unfortunately the 2000 edition it sold out long ago. We are now feverishly updating it for 2005 and it should be published towards the end of the summer. Email to get on the waiting list.
In the meantime, I'd suggest gathering as many catalogs as you can. Veer has some nice type booklets and the FontFont catalogue and FontShop catalogs are pretty hefty.
