something different > something that is not trendy, something that does not belong to a cool "scene", something that features people who are actually creating meaningful and inspiring work.
or, just something completely different conceptually... i had an idea which i thought was kind of cool that i'll share to give you an example; ask 100 people to find 100 pages in a magazine which evoke real emotions in them, and then get them to write, scribble and draw all over whatever page they've chosen with their commentary about whatever they've found on that page... and then scan in all those pages and print that as a magazine.
good writing helps too.
