You are awake during the whole thing. They do one eye at a time. After putting numbing drops in, they clamp your eyelids down so you can't blink. That's the hardest part. No, it doesn't hurt at all, but is a very strange feeling. It's very quick, though, and once it's done you'll see it was no big deal. I had to remind myself to breathe a few times while I laid there. It's important to stay calm.
When it was all over (a few minutes later) everything's cloudy, like you're underwater, but your vision is obviously improved. That was the coolest thing. Then I had to go home & sleep for 4 hours, which is very important to begin the healing process. I woke up a few times, being very sensitive to the light, and I could feel some itchiness & discomfort, but no pain.
I was officially up & about an hour ago & looked outside for the first time...
It was like that scene in 'Interview with the Vampire".
