its an easy effect. ie highlights images when selected with a pixel checkerboard. you get two images, and interlace them into one image with one image taking up the pixels that would be covered up by the selection effect, and another image in the other uncovered pixels.
it helps to make the covered up image brighter or otherwise stand out more than the other one, so you don't see two images at a time (like in o0o's buddha).
