Dear Ian,
Placements these days are just as hard to getting a job. It really depends where you are and what you are willing to undertake for 'experience'.
I would put together a smart pdf of your work as best quality as you can get it without being overly heavy in size and email it around the houses asap as every tom, dick, harry will be doing the same. The key to getting a placement is to distinguish yourself from the crowd and be confident, hireable, happy and keen. Make sure that comes through in your presentation and also let them know a little about yourself too in your own individual way, if anything surprise them with something different as they'll get the same drawl written in the same boring way and presented in the same way too.
After you've sent it, wait a day or two and then follow it up with a phone call just to ask if they've received it.
Best of luck to you Ian as I know it's a lot tougher now than it used to be.
