Be true to what you love. I've been using abstract 3D as a means of experimenting with form, ultimately taking the ideas into architecture. I've been doing this since 1993, long before I even had a computer (yeah, I gots lotsa models of anything form soldered wireframes to plexiglass, to basswood).
Some of us pursue these types of 'random' images with an objective, but sometimes it's just to create and experiment. I hope that people's ideas of this just fade away, and focus on the 'new' trend (tan, minimalist sites?), but it really doesn't matter.
Personally, I get something out of experimenting with light and form, so I will continue to do so as I did before all this nonsensical discussion of trends started.
