  Two spaces was used because typewriter text is monospaced (everything is the same distance apart) so two was need to visually break to the next sentence.
  Now since everything has been digitized, typographers have taken that into consideration and left extra space after the period leaving NO REASON TO EVER LEAVE TWO SPACES.
