cool, I inspired someone. thought I needed a few more years of work before I could. :)
1. fogle you're close. they're actually one mc. at the beginning and middle of the mc, it stops, and randomly starts up again, using actionscript. the build-up effect is also actionscript, the probability of a mc playing again after stopping increases over time.
2. the transitions... most are rather straight forward variations of wipes, ie, you have a white box moving from off-stage onto it.
