Practicality isn't an issue. You can get regular diesel in most places, especially near highways...
And the percentage thing is true, not many ppl are buying diesels in the U.S. mainly because in the 80's it left a bad taste as they were kind of stinky and noisy. But those days are over. There's a good reason why more than 60% of the cars being sold in europe are diesel these days.
