longer gestation and maturation drove the evolutionary need for gendering (someone has to stay home with the kids), competition for sex (and food, etc) is a benefit of the gendering and continues to drive evolution. Amphibs were the transitional with their ability to adapt their gender based on need. As maturation and gestation needs increased with lifeform complexity, gender became hard wired
