Happened to my old apple studio display. First the screen zapped like there was some huge static discharge and then eventual it resorted to smoke and fire.
Called apple, they took it away and fixed it no problem and it was long past warranty. Must have been a manufacturing defect for a certain lot. 2 years later and its still working fine.
Call the manufacturer, you never know.
