    There always are preset shooting modes. And you can move to manual ones as you learn.
    Other models to look at are Minolta D7D (the only model w/ AntiShock), Nikon D70(s), Pentax *istDS.
    Pentax is good for those who own old manual lenses (it fully supports 'em). Minolta is a great nightshooter (AS, very good and fast AF).
    Try them all in your hands, you can't really go wrong with either one.
    For portability: 350D or the pentax.

    The point with dslr is, you're limited by your lens quality (also aperture, zoom range). Good glass can be expensive as hell. The canon 18-55 kit lens is not known as one of very good quality. Still, it will probably produce much better results than G2.
