    Yes, most definitely. Also, you'll get the same superb quality from 350d (drebel xt), just a bit worse ergonomics.

    The main advantage of DSLR over compact cameras is not only exchangeable optics, but also low noise levels.
    DSLR cams have bigger sensors (dimmension wise, not MP) which are way less noisy.
    An ISO1600 image shot with a D20 (or 350D) is less noisy than your G2's ISO200. This gives D20 a huge advantage in low light.
    Also, shooting with dslr, you can brighten up underexposed pics in postprocessing in a way you couldn't with compact. This applies to JPG too, not only RAW.
    Simply put, there's more information recorded in shadows in dslr cams than with compacts.
