I'm starting up a little project with some buddies selling engraved items. We're looking for a decent machine to buy that can engrave on various surfaces.
Anyone here have experience with this that can recommend a machine?

Don't know much about Laser etching, maybe that's a direction as well. What mediums does this work on?
- Muncher0
Derek Akora, Sylvia Browne, Edgar Cayce, Uri Geller... As long as they haven't passed beyond the veil a very very long time ago it should work on almost all of them.

What sort of things do you want to etch?
Best would be both a laser and a CNC, so you can work on most things.
- we want to do different surfaces. still working that outdbloc
- lol at downvotesdetritus
- Well, asnwer my first quesiton and drop me a line if you wish. Downvotes aside, I'm likely one of the only people on QBN who know anything about this domain.detritus
- ..although apparently I can't for the life of me spell. Imbecile and Georges are the only two others on here who work in this domain, I think?detritus
- Thanks detritus. once we get shit figured out I'll prob hit you up.dbloc

don't get the cheap blue laser cutter/etcher from china
- Haha, I had a minor panic when I saw that earlier this year.. thankfully we're a few years off cheap lasers that are capable and lastdetritus
- Have you used one, btw? I've seen plenty of YouTubes but not seen one in the flesh.detritus
- yeah, i bought one years ago. it stopped working after a week and i have no idea why or how to fix it, there's no support for the thingscarabin

you can also consider a subtractive engraver that removes the metal from your substrate.
- May as well just go with a well-tooled CNC, which can do that and more besides.detritus
- it's cheaper than replacing tubes and chemicals.omg
- ?detritus
- The grass looks greener for a cnc machine that can carve over a laser. I've had to buy 5-6 tubes in my lifetime, each one costing me $500+omg
- You should buy American, then :) My tube's lasted over 8 years... But then it cost me a fucking fortunedetritus
- Mind you, now I've said that, I bet you it dies this week...detritus
- I could have shelled out for the pricier tubes to save 30%, but after one froze in the winter and broke. I'd worry about buying them. USA made may be betteromg
- ... lucky for me, I'll be getting the space needed for a CNC. I just need to Build a Wall to prevent sound and dust from bothering the neighbors.omg

If you want to carve or mill get a CNC machine, if you want to etch fine detail or cut out thin pieces laser is what you want.
Figure out what your needs are and what scale of production you're going to require and that will tell you what machine you need.
They ain't cheap, especially if you buy the wrong machine and use it as a paperweight.
- we want to engrave text and line art, so it sounds like we will need a laser.dbloc

Not sure what you are looking to spend man, but here are a few options.
https://fslaser.com/Muse (testing one of these at work now)
Epilog Laser
Universal Laser SystemsWhat are you looking to do? I can send you a sample pack of materials we have if you'd like (acrylics, both extruded and cast, natural wood, metals etc.)
I work for Rowmark.com (bad site, good materials) and we sell through distribution.
- Feel free to hit me up on via e-mail if you want more information.rodzilla
- You work for Rowmark? Haha, great - can you get on producing catalogues with metric measurements please? ;)detritus
- I run an epilog and for many circumstances is recommend one, but there are many cheaper options these days, depending on contextdetritus
- Detritus - we will be putting out better stuff for Rowmark Europe - pretty sure the color chart has metric ;)rodzilla
- any requests for products or features on the website detritus?rodzilla
- Turns out my catalogues are in metric, sorry - I wrotwe to my supplier a wee while back about it.. apparently that was over three years ago!detritus
- I wrote an enquiry to fs laser as I like the look of their stuff... sadly I have received the most useless and grammatically incoherent response from them :(detritus
- What are you looking for? I can certainly try to help you out and get a couple answers. Where exactly are you located?rodzilla
