Just to clarify, I don't know Diaz. I noticed your hitting my website in my sitemeter tracking info, so thought I'd follow your conversation. Not his fault.

mekk, the budget is zero. It's a volunteer effort allowing about a dozen local SF historians to further the study of an early SF landmark, the Cliff House. The national park servers links to the site as well.

But to the larger point, yes, of course the site needs work. It's grown organically over the years and shows it. Probably the largest challenge I face with adopting wordpress or some other content management system is the sheer volume of image data involved. I scan all these old photos at very high resolution...so if the images are to be stored in the database, that could be problematic.

    > Put more money in creating good images
Good images? They are scans of 100 year old photos, more scans than creations. Example...

(zoom in on the people, the banners on the building. did you see the guy on the roof?)

    > A proper Amazon widget for the books and other affiliate links could generate more Money.
N/A since the goal is not to make money.

    > Page very long pages, split that.
Very true. I have on some, others still too long.

Another challenge with reorganizing is that other sites out there already link to specific pages or graphics. So if I want to keep those from breaking I'd need to add redirects all over the place. It's a challenge!

    Thanks for the analysis,
    gary

    • the images are fantastic, btw.Gnash
    • ok, so now I feel like my response was a bit much. The site lacks... structure. If you were to create a clear separation of Header/Content/Foote...hobgoblin
    • that would really help. Then, the header links definitely need some love. Try to bucketize them into digestible chunks.hobgoblin
    • Colors could be an easy fix too. The type is a bit hard to read on the ultra dark background. I know the yellow gives off the 'old' look but its hard to readhobgoblin
    • There is always a Budget :) A dozen people could gather a bit cash for fonts, theme and servers. There is also support for cultural projects from the city maybemekk
    • With Images I meant the presentation, make nice thumbnails an galleries, colorize them and make an before/after slider. Some cool stuff to play aroundmekk

Delete the entire thing and start over. Granted, it might hold a ton of SEO value with the content on it. Check for that first.
