So ive had a big 2016. had my first child, moved to a top UK digital agency and learned a lot more even tho ive been doing this since 1998.
Paying it forward anyone got any SEO questions they need answering?
- trooperbill-3
ffffffffffff.... that should be Q&A lolz
- Which agency? Are you allowed to say?breadlegz
- sadly not.trooperbill
- can you list a few options and so we can try and guess? ;)spot13

If a site shows up a few pages in, but the competition for #1 is minimal, what would it take to get there (dollar wise)?
- trooperbill0
@formed i know its a cop out but what does it rank for. Googles now weird hybrid between ranking the most relevant content and ones with the best back-links. a general answer would be a couple of thousand a month and between 12-18 months but each niche and keyword are different so sorry there's no defacto calculation.

I find 301s confusing...
If I were to completely update a site that does not really rely on organic search would the site still be penalised if I didn't bother with redirects? Or will the new structure eventually be accepted?
- trooperbill-1
it will eventually be picked up - could take several months tho. id keep an eye on 404s from referring links tho as you never know what traffic your missing out on and 301 these as a priority. also make sure your sitemap.xml file is updated and in googles (webmaster tools) search console. plus fetch and render the site's home page and then use ion search console and submit all pages.

I'm starting a brand new online tech business this year in ecommerce services.
What are the top 5 things I should fit into the development schedule to ensure best results for launch?
Alternatively, can you just suggest any handy guides that simplify this for those who aren't ready to go large-scale on the SEO front?
- trooperbill-1
@SteveJobs this is OK but misses a lot of the nuances that your site will face https://moz.com/beginners-guide-…
- Thanks trooper, guess I'm a bit more seo savvy than I realized as much of this is review.. although only on chapter 5!SteveJobs

Google recommends the following to get better rankings in their search engine:
Make pages primarily for users, not for search engines. Don't deceive your users or present different content to search engines than you display to users, a practice commonly referred to as "cloaking."
Make a site with a clear hierarchy and text links. Every page should be reachable from at least one static text link.
Create a useful, information-rich site, and write pages that clearly and accurately describe your content. Make sure that your <title> elements and ALT attributes are descriptive and accurate.
Use keywords to create descriptive, human-friendly URLs. Provide one version of a URL to reach a document, using 301 redirects or the rel="canonical" attribute to address duplicate content.
- seems pretty straight forward other than the last part_niko
- <- wouldn't rank for anythingtrooperbill
- those are all very good pointsvero_vandal

Thanks for this thread trooper!
Have you had experience in getting a business listed on google maps?
I'm talking about having your business pin as one of the few search result listing you have in the area? Does google limit the amount of pins on the map?
My client has a google business listing which appears when you search for business name but not when you search name of service. His competitors are listed but not him.
How do you get on??
- unlimited no of pins but prioritised. needs uniform citations and an optimised profile. schema will help too.trooperbill

What's your take on Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP)?
When should we be doing it? When does it not really matter? I've heard it's really only important for news/blog sites that are updated regularly. Is that true?
Thank you in advance and congrats on the new arrival in 2016!
- there will be a tipping point of adoption so after that probably.trooperbill

Here's a Q: is there any correlation between SEO and Engagement Metrics?
- absolutely there isvero_vandal
- there might be but theres only speculation and no hard data on things like bounces back to search etc AFAIKtrooperbill

What are you looking to do exactly?
Attribution is the name of the game, for any channel or source. Whether it be organic, paid, E-mail, social, etc.
Are you looking to match up organic results and how well they convert for you?
For organic, see:
http://www.gshiftlabs.com/web-pr…I prefer it over MOZ.

Start kicking knowledge bro!
Would you ever advise a client to do banner ads? Or banner ads in conjunction with other digital advertising? Either, social + banner + ad words?
- yes but not for seo. its more of a wider digi marketing strategy. look into email automation too.trooperbill

What's the #1 thing ppl misunderstand about SEO (they think they know what it is but "that's not it")?
Bravo on a yr well done
- write the best content - this doesnt work in isolation. you need a majority of your campaign to still be made up of links.trooperbill
- interesting... could you point me to a really good example?bklyndroobeki
- thats hard because they dont rrank.trooperbill

For images do you do Alt & Title tags?
If so, do they both need to be unique? or is it OK to make them the same?
- alt yes, title no (its not indexed by google) 100 characters approx each. unique no. descriptive yes. use alt="*" for any functional images that dont need alt.trooperbill
- Thanks Troop! What are functional images? Non photos?dbloc
- Ones contributing to your design and not your content.ETM
- ^exactlytrooperbill
- why alt="*"?nb

Congrats on your 2016!
What's the state of SEO and SPAs? Can I build a site in AJAX framework (angular, react etc) and get the same the google juice as separate pages? Pros and cons with this?
- in theory yes but theyre a bitch to audit as the tools havent caught up yet. id advise the site be navigable with both javascript and css turned off too.trooperbill
- dbloc0
Should title tags be used on navigation links?
- Years ago the title attribute was considered dead and useless (though it can aid accessibility). It'd be interesting if that has changed.evilpeacock
- no title tags just add to psage bloat. theyre a mac only thing as safari doesnt use alt tagstrooperbill
- safari doesn't use alt tags?dbloc
- ^doesnt display them on mouseovertrooperbill
- thought they were for screenreaders as well?fadein11

Yes, actually. We recently launched our new Dotcom presence and are seeing some big dips in page rank. In particular our campaign landing pages have dropped significantly.
Someone in Marketing said they were told by a third-party vendor that our Marketo forms (which are 3rd party embeds) will actually penalize page ratings since they are not hosted on the same domain. Is this true or false? Does Google penalize pages for hosting 3rd party forms?
- how are you calculating pagerank? no you shouldnt be penalised but theres a range of things you can do just in case. email metrooperbill
