Ships + Works as Advertised = Sold
Otherwise, fuck off MS.

I predict many accidents while walking. Many people will get hit by cars they thought were on their HoloLens.

> I always wonder why car companies show off these hyper-designed concept cars. Is it to show off how creative and innovative they are or maybe to get media attention on their brand. They never see the light of day at at least not that I can tell. Maybe MS is doing the same thing. Showing off their ability to create a new product or idea but all it shows is their inability to execute the plan.
Inability?
I protest that.
Protest I say.Since we all love to hate MS how about a look at some paralells with other industries.
Fashion.
I'm not a big fashion guy, but without really being into it I can tell that the crazier stuff you see on the catwalk is *gasp* not really made to be worn anywhere but there.
It's probably made for the reason you mentioned: showcasing creativity and innovation. But not necessarily as some sort of show of might; these (kinda hideous) creations aren't necesserily made but are there to gauge- and possibly even create interest. Trends can spring from it.
How about something closer to home...
For graphic designers in the late 90ies you sort of -had to- have one part of your site dubbed "experimental design". Scripts running amok, or a 200+ layered psd, whatever you had.
You might have wanted that sort of design happening in your next project, but I think you knew damn well it wasn't really viable in most cases.
Still you did it.
You fucked around with those experimental designs.
And gosh dammit you loved it.The collective effort sparked some trends and adaptation, but really, you were happy either way.
People have been experimenting with future vision and plain fucking-aroundary forever. These robots weren't necesserily produced, or even sought out to be produced. They're imagining the future much on the same premise:
...but getting back to MS.
This is not their first future-vision product nor is it their last.
It's out out there. I'm happy they're tossing out ideas, activly gauging the market, creating trends and (perhaps inadvertently) generally pushing things forward. The same as those crazy fashion peeps. Or those 90ies graphic designers, those dinosaurs. Would you call the people them inabled too?
I do think we agree on one thing: at any large company you'll have commities and other groups that will completely destroy a concept destined for production. It's the achilles heel, it's where smaller companies have an advantage, but now I'm ranting.
Anyways, that may be why some products turns out like shit, and I think that's what you're really complaining about.
Final note: it's not just MS, but has probably happened with something out of your favorite companies too.
- I've seen that outfit at the clubz. Your argument is invalid.nb
- I hate Microsoft, but good argument Peter

I guess Google gets away with throwing shit at the walls because, well, they are Google. It's amazing how many products they release, how many businesses and ideas they acquire - Google are a beast.... yet somehow play us all like fiddle if they are the friendly nerdy underdog.
- We're talking about MS though?monospaced
- in response to the above. Like Apple MS gets hated and scrutinzed.inteliboy

So this isn't as much vaporware as we might have thought. This has been built and tested, and is set to actually roll out as a consumer product in the next few months.

Ok so it's still demo tech, but apparently this is what you actually see with current HoloLens - note the very tiny window envelope
- er, sorry - C is what you see.
A is sans HoloLens, B is what MS press is idealising output as.detritus - Would it be practical to run regular desktop program using this or is it only for novelty?qoob
- Wow if this article is true that's kind of disappointing and not at all what the early reviews promised.reanimate
- er, sorry - C is what you see.

I'm very curious to see what it does when a real world object, say a vase on a desk, passes in front of the intended projection space.
All the videos I've seen so far appear to have been carefully laid out so we don't encounter this situation, which doesn't bode well.
.
I mean, you'd have to have some kind of complex-ass kinectProjection-cum-autoGreenSc... tech which... well, sounds complex.

Bleght, it's going to be a total bust.

What were you thinking Microsoft? Jesus.

Lots of potential... possibly a decade away from this getting even close to being commonplace in homes. These things need to get down to the size of normal sunglasses before people accept this as something they want to use on a regular basis. Until then it will just remain a novelty that people try and then forget about.
Ive used the Oculus and although it was very cool, I wanted that thing off my head after 2 minutes.
- Google Glass 2formed
- the biggest problem is that it only works for one person, and anyone else in the room is left out of the experiencemonospaced
- I agree, it's got a long way to go before it's adopted, and it's way ahead of its time. I guess it's like a proof of concept. Kinda like what a Newton was.monospaced
- MS always do stupid stuff like this - invest gajillions in decent research that Doesn't Quite Work, and then let someone else make all the money years later.detritus
- Although perhaps this is just veiled philanthropy from Bill Gates? Get the world excited about something and wind them up.detritus
- can't wait to try oculus... interesting to hear you weren't fan.inteliboy
