amazon has really been creeping me out lately. their new phone is the greatest tracking/data gathering device ever made

Personally, waiting for next-gen Apple TV with gaming upgrade.
- That will be great but maybe they're waiting for the 4k era. I haven't heard any rumors in a while.CyBrainX

Years in I'm still waiting for a 3rd gen apple tv crack from these guys:
http://firecore.com/Downgraded to a 2nd gen just to have firecore/infuse working.
- yeah, i wish they'd crack it. doubt they will. D:jaylarson

bump.
Which one can you stream video from computer which is not in iTunes?
yet still have netflix and stuffs.- Probably not the Apple TV. For this I'd use a raspberry Pi with Kodi (former XBMC)mekk
- not familiar with "raspberry Pi with Kodi (former XBMC)" ....pango
- you can stream ANY video to the Apple TVmonospaced
- just have to use a 3rd party app, or convert, which is a slight inconveniencemonospaced
- "can play any video if you convert" really mono?mekk
- lol... yeah sorry about that... there are some amazing drag/drop airplay players that are almost hacks thoughmonospaced

Apple TV's AirPlay function would drive me into Apples arms if I had an iPhone or would use iTunes.
- hmmm it mean i can pretty much play whatever movie's on my laptop screen on the tv right?pango
- yes, its like a monitor via network but pretty slow, not recommended for gaming or watching movies. I'd like to have it for musicmekk
- hmmm i would worry about mirroring 1080p movie....pango
- you can stream the video file just fine with all 3 of them, but mirroring your computer desktop is something different.mekk
- only the Apple TV allows TV to become an external displaymonospaced
- I find that it works really well when I stream movies from my iPad. The only issues I've had have been related to connection speed.Glitterati_Duane
- streaming a movie from the iPad is not the same as streaming your whole screen content w/ sound etc.mekk

I really like my FireTV, if you have or want amazon prime this is your go to. You can side load android apps (XBMC/Kodi, emulators, etc.) without the need for a jailbreak or root. It has a superior controller compared to Apple's, is a faster performing device and solid wifi speed & stability. I constantly stream media on my local network and have never had an issue (other Android options have had issues). I had an AppleTV2, jailbroken, sold it for a profit 3 years after purchase. Never had a Roku. If you want airplay there are a few apps for the FireTV that enable it... mixed results there.

I use PS4 for Amazon Prime, Netflix and YouTube with no complaints. I got my parents a Roku 3 for Xmas and they love it. They have their own Netflix account, and I'm letting them borrow my Prime account, no complaints.

again go with Roku if you dont want apple, amazon or google shoving their shit on you
- I don't find that Amazon and Apple shove much shit on you when all you're doing is streaming shows/moviesmonospaced
- It's really just interface differences and some feature/channel differencesmonospaced
- chromecast doesnt support amazon correct? just shit like that. legal stuff alsoCALLES
- I hear ya, but I don't really blame them for not offering something that directly competes with their own offerings.monospaced
- to be honest, I don't really care where I rent a movie from... iTunes, cable company, etc...monospaced
- yeah dont blame em either business is business.CALLES

Here's CNET's take on the discussion.
- The fact that Roku has cross platform search and a headphone jack in the remote locks it in, IMOmonospaced
- I just don;t get why Apple isn't working harder to lock-in this market.ETM
- Not only are they likely not attracting a lot of new customers, they're losing old ones.ETM
- Any device that increases sales of iTunes media products should be better encouragedETM
- it's actually selling pretty well, despite them not pushing it.monospaced
- But it could be more. And as a long-time user, I've jumped ship over the holidays.ETM
- And I don;t think that I am that unique in doing so.ETM
- Also with iTunes music sales dropping off, bolstering with more TV/Movie sales couldn't hurt.ETM

This is the first I've heard of the Google Nexus Player. Is it shit?

^^^i'm inclined to think Roku will be my next box. I'm concerned with Amazon, Google and Apple mining me for more data and me paying for the privilege. I have no idea if Roku sells user data but at least it's not the other three.

If you have an Apple computer, go with AppleTV. You can connect your entire home with it.
If you don't, get whatever is cheapest.
- mekk0
one questine: why do you want to stream video from your computer exactly? wouldn't a USB port together with an external HDD be way easier? All boxes have netflix & co integrated
- can TVs just start playing anything from a HD connected by USB?monospaced
- maybe his tv hasn't got usb yet, most of them suck anyways playing "no vacation video" contentmekk
- Why not? Centrally located, multiple devices at once and the bandwidth of a local network.ETM
- Less bringing laptop around. And less cables would be nice.pango
- I understand that but with an ext. HDD and the functions of those boxes you don't need to stream from computer at allmekk
- and you would have to move the HD every time you had to add something to it?monospaced
- that's why I do have a NAS. I think storing content on the actual machine is outdated. Cloud, External HDD or NAS it is. My computers do not have more than 512GB of spacemekk
- is. My computers do not have more than 512 gigs of storage in themmekk

Roku 3 wins I think.
